I have added a loop to a group of tasks as a test but now cannot remove it.

The only way is to create a "phantom" task and tell the loop to use this and then delete the task.

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature request but a simple tick box for active/inactive Loop status (similar to trigger tick box?) would be perfect.

Perhaps you are looking in the wrong place. Easiest place to build and delete loops are when you open the Job and go to Tasks tab.
