I have attempted to upgrade our system several time and it always fails. I have 5.1.6 on a windows server 2008 running the latest service pack and updates within the last month. Each time I have tried to upgrade in the past, it has failed and rolled back.

Doing a full removal of the program and service using methods described in the forums and then a fresh install does not work.

I end up having to kill the VisualCron service from cmd line. Remove VC using the cleanup tool and then install 5.1.6 again.

I have tried this with every available 5.5.X version. Today was even more fun because in the middle of it I was informed my maintenance had lapsed.

Now I'm a big fan but wow. I will get the new Maintenace but this had better get settled quick!

The main error I get is:
Error 1001. The installation failed, and the rollback has been performed --> Unable to create an instance of the VisualCronService.ProjectInstaller installer type. -->Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --> This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.

I would have sent this direct to tech support but maintenance has expired. Also, I have a test machine with a licensed copy that has had no issue with the update.

Hi,

we had some upgrade problems in the past that was affected by new windows updates.

So, after your cleanup, is it only latest version that works but not 5.1.6?

I can only run the 5.1.6 version. All the other 5.5.X fail to load, fail to create the service, cannot start the service; or that cypto message occurs. I really wish I had not installed in on a 2008 machine.

Windows 2008 is the recommended server system for VisualCron. Have not heard about that message before but I would check:

1. if you have done all updates
2. if you know of any special restrictions on that server?
3. test with the latest 5.5.6.

We had an issue before where the installation could timeout because validation of our code signing certificate could timeout. This validation was later removed (though the certificate is still there). Try installing 5.5.6. from the beta version to at least confirm this.

I tried the update with 5.5.3 when it came out.
I tried the updatewith 5.5.4 when it came out.
Today I tried it with 5.5.5

Each time I have tried, I have installed all OS updates then rebooted the server.
I export my settings then run the upgrade.

I know of no restrictions on the server. The account used is an Enterprise Admin.

I only have a 1.5 hour window twice a week when I can even touch this thing and I am out of time for this week. I will get the maintenance back up and I will try the 5.5.6 version on Tuesday.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I found a 25 minute window and I thought I would chance it. I installed the beta 5.5.6 which went in fine, but I imediately got a vctray would not start. Also, the VisualCron service will not start. I changed the service to run as a domain admin account, then I tried to start the service. It did work either. I am rebooting the machine now. Thoughts? BTW as before, no outstanding updates. No known issues and 5.1.6 works fine.

This is the tray error:

We did search on Google and found a couple of posts with similar problems. Here is one workaround:

Here is a hotfix:

Here is another which probable seems to be the real reason to the problem:

Just to keep everyone informed. I check the GPO for our servers and it was set to "not defined". I checked the local GPO for the server and it was set to disabled. However, the registry was set to enable. I have changed the reg key to zero which is disabled. I will attempt to upgrade to latest version tomorrow and will update the thread.

Problem solved using the above procedure. It was indeed the registry issue that was preventing installation. I am very pleased with the help I recieved in the forum, thank you all.
