We are converting our scheduled tasks to now run on a file trigger. The trigger monitors folders on 2 different servers and when the appropriate file pattern comes in it launches the task. This works great, however at random (seeming) times the triggers are all disabled.

I understand why the trigger would be disabled, yet I have not been able to determine why they are actually disabling (the target machines are not going offline).

1) I looked into the server log and see when/where it started happening, but I'm not sure what it translates to.

2) Is there a way to monitor the monitor? Meaning, I need a way (email notification) to know when the file triggers have gone offline. Logging into the server to check every so often is not really an option, nor is waiting for a group to complain that their tasks have not been run.

Thanks,
Kent

2) yes, in the later versions 5.6.2. you have an "Internal Trigger" in VisualCron called the "VisualCron trigger" which can trigger when a file trigger has been inactivated or deleted. Just add an email Task to that Job you add the trigger to and you will get notified when.

You should also take a look at reconnect values. Maybe default values are a little bit short in time.

Thanks for the information. I have upgraded to 5.6.2 and found the internal trigger. I created a Event Trigger -> VisualCron and selected Trigger -> Trigger Expired (deleted or inactivated).

I am not sure about create the email notification. I went to the task tab and created a Messaging -> Email. I did not see anything that would tie it directly to the new trigger I created. I do not want an email each time this job runs only if the trigger fails. What am I missing?

I am not sure how you have set it up but this internal trigger together with Email Task needs to be added into a new Job that is indepenent of the first Job. Now, this new Job will Trigger (and send email) every time a Trigger (in general) is deactivated.

Awesome!! That was going to be my next question (if a single job could monitor the whole system). I will create a new job and set the trigger and email accordingly.

Thanks,
Kent

I have followed these instructions and when i deactivate a File trigger, the job that is to send the email task does not run. One thing i have noticed when setting up the Internal Trigger is that it will not save my credentials. Version 5.6.2

We have upgraded to 5.6.9 and found that the internal trigger does not work. I have created a Event Trigger -> VisualCron and selected Trigger -> Trigger Expired (deleted or inactivated). I have actually tried with all 3 selected and every combination of the 3 being selected.

Next I alter a job monitor path so that the trigger will get de-activated. The job trigger gets de-activated, but the above monitor job does not trigger and thus does not send an email.

I have used the 'Test Job' button to ensure that the email task was setup correctly. It was as I received the email. Is this a bug or have I defined something wrong in the new monitor job?

This is a bug that is fixed in an upcoming release.

I'm a little bit confused,

is version 5.6.9 is still the newest Visualcron Release ?
This trigger notification would be one of our most needed jobs.

Is there a new estimated release date or did we miss something? :)

Thanks

Sorry, this has taken a while as a lot of things came up at the same time. We hope to release soon. If you are interested you could try a beta.

Is there a way to send in the email the actual trigger that was inactivated or is it just when any trigger gets inactivated? Also, is there an automated way to reactivate the trigger when inactivated?

Right now, only that any Trigger was inactvated. Currently you can't activate a Trigger. Please those as feature request in the Feature request forum.

I have installed 5.7.3 and this internal trigger does not work. Reviewing this thread, I am not sure if this trigger ever worked. Please advise if there is a working version.

That is the same version i am on and it is working for me. Make sure you create a new job, and then an email task. For the job you need to use an event trigger and then select Visualcron as the option...there should be a choice for Inactivated & Deleted, Inactivated, Deleted.

Thx klewis for the input; however, my issue is not setting up the job, but testing the job. The most significant issue we encounter are disabled file triggers when the trigger is looking at files located on another server. If that other server ever goes offline (due to reboot or network failure) the file trigger is disabled. In this latest version, I cannot create a file trigger across the network, nor can I map a network drive. So, in a way the problem has been resolved... This version only support local file triggers, but this is not the solution we're looking for.

BTW - let me know if you can map a network drive using this release

I have had problems mapping a netwrok drive if i browse out to the folder location...if i manually type in the path, i have no problem. Browsing to folder locations is causing a problem in this version, but i have sent in the error file. Same with triggers...all have to be manually typed in.

Could you give an example of the path you get from the browsing and one you type in manually?

The browsing is the same as the manual but when i use the browsing option visual cron crashes with the error file that was sent to you. X:\Program Files\Stromberg40\HTML\eSupervisor\Reports\Temp...X being a visual cron network.

On another note with the file trigger...it works very well but i receive an email that a trigger was disabled even when i make a change to it...not disable or delete?

Hi Support,

Is it now possible to identify which trigger was deactivated, and if so, how do I include this in the generic email task :-)

Thanks

Create a new job>then add an email task type>on the email tab select main settings and i put this variable in the subject

{TRIGGER(Active|LastTrigger|VisualCron.Result.Message)}...

Then under triggers for the job, select Visual Cron as your setting then under the Visual Cron tab select which option you want under the Trigger option. I have selected Trigger expired (Inactivated), but i have noticed that if i even touch a trigger or resave or edit, not inactivate, i get an email saying whatever my subject sends me...no big deal, probably bug.
