Hi

VC 5.5.5 is reporting 'The directory name is invalid' in an error dialog when i try and execute a local (background) task on Vista.

I have set up 2 VC servers - one on Vista and the other on Windows 2003, both servers belong to the same domain and am using the the same credentials. These credentials have admin privileges on both machines and full control of the shares On the Vista machine a local task has been created which references a local share. On the Windows server a remote task has been created which references the same share on the Vista machine. The windows remote task executes successfully.

On vista I also created a remote task which access a unc share on the windows 2003 server, under the same domain credentials - this works fine.

So the only scenario which causes a problem is a local task on a Vista machine which references a local unc.

Try switching from "With profile" to "network credentials only".

Was already running with network credentials only, but switching to with profile doesn't solve the problem.

I'm running on Vista in locked down mode and the VC service account (SYSTEM) has been explicitly granted full control on the share..

I am not sure exactly what "locked down" mode means and how it affect the system.

What do you mean with a "local" UNC?

Locked down mode, means that users (even administrators) require elevated priviliges to perfrom certain operations eg write to Registry. On Vista one generally lauches processes with Admin rights explicitly in order to provide that process with the neccesary rights.

By local UNC i mean that i have a share setup on my machine which hosts the VC server eg \\VCServer\sharename.

Is there a general setting for the locked down mode that you use? If you have used custom settings I think you should try a full administrator account first and then remove permissions one by one so we can verify if there is a permission problem and what permission affects this.

Hi, I am using an administrator account and VC is running under local system. Both the admin and Local System have explicit permissions (Full Control) on the UNC share.

Is it not possable for you to check this on a Vista machine in your test environment?

Unfortunately, we don't have that environment setup. Credential handling should be the same for Windows 2003 as in Vista.

But if you say that the Local System account has full access to the share - why do you need to run the Task with a Credential?

This environment is a dev environment, so I am trying to create generic jobs/processes which can run in different deployments. We will be exporting the processes from the dev environment, then modifying them wrt server names etc and then deploying into UAT (Test) environments and finally into production, so I cannot make assumptions about the locations and or credentials.

To run VC under local system allows rogue jobs to be deployed which have then full access to the machine, we would prefer to run Vc with network service type credentials and protect the relevant resources with diff credentials.

After that mouthful, have confirmed though that we can execute successfully against a local UNC on the VC server if no credentials are specified.
