When attempting to set up a file trigger for a remote server on VC 5.5.3, the remote computer name field does not allow an entry to be made. The trigger is "active."

You don't need that field. Just use a UNC path (\\servername\folder) in the directory text box.

I thought file trigger for "remote" folders don't work.

It does, as long as it is a computer in the network.

hmm, was this added in a later version? I will re-test, as had issues with this in 5.4.9.
May have been because I was trying to trigger on a FTP folder /Test. Will try on a UNC path.

This feature has existed for years but require that you:

1. use a UNC path
2. use a proper Credential for the remote file system

I had a thread with you regarding this in Jan, but it was related to file triggers on FTP server. Just tested it and it did work ;-)

Sorry, I was not talking about files on FTP, but a normal network computer. Missed that in your last post.

FTP is a totally different protocol and does not give us the events we need. There are some feature requests about that but it is not "easy" to implement.

Hendrik,

I knew there was a reason I didn't use this.
If the task is a FTP task, the file trigger gets disabled.
It only works when the task is a copy files task.

It does not matter what Task it is - following the Trigger. It only matter where the files are located.

after my last comment, I tried amending one of my jobs, and get the attached error, and it is most certainly a valid directory.

In this case, I guess, that you are not using the right Credential or none at all.

I thought you might say that 😉 Have tried a few different credentials

I believe the file trigger is very commonly used. What is needed is a Credential that either matches a local user on the remote machine or a domain user that has access to that folder.

Hendrik,

This just does not work reliably. I keep getting the message that directory does not exist, but it does, and I am MOST DEFINITELY using correct credentials, as these credentials are used for the same job, when using a time trigger. What am I doing wrong here?

Is it a normal network share? Do you using polling or no polling option?

polling seems to be "greyed out"

I mean the information in the File tab of the Trigger.

Is it a normal network share or anything specific you can think of?

Oh, sorry.
In that case, polling (Samba compatible) is currently not being used.

I managed to get the remote file trigger working, but not reliably.
If I place a file there, it gives an exception in task, file in use.
If I then manually run the task it works.

You probably need to:

1. check "Trigger when file is released"
2. check "Put job in queue" in Job main settings.

Trigger when file is released is already selected.
Put job in queue was selected, but made no difference.

Again, when I run the job manually it works:

07/04/2010 16:13:56 Info Task started: Copy files locally (53509)
07/04/2010 16:13:57 Info Task completed: Copy files locally (53509)

If I place a file in the folder the trigger is set for it fails:

07/04/2010 16:10:28 Info Task started: Copy files locally (53470)
07/04/2010 16:10:28 Err Exception in Task: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
07/04/2010 16:10:28 Info Task completed: Copy files locally (53470)

It is probably related to how you have set up the file and folder filters. You probably only want to copy the triggered file. Then you need to use that result variable from the trigger for both folder and file.

Hendrik,

All I am trying to do is copy files from within the folder.
I will send you an email with some screenshots, but I cannot get this to work reliably.
