There is no way of renaming a variable today. This should be possible I would think, as all references to this variable should be pointing the underying id.

Right, we are planning some major changes about being to merge global objects, for example update a Connection with another Connection etc. Also, search and replace text in settings and that is some way to do this.

The Variables id is the Variable name so there is not an GUID id in the same sense as others.
