I'd liek to be able to trial the beta versions on a server in my enviroment but still be able to use the client to connect to other, older version servers i.e. I'm testing 4.5.8 but still need to connect to 4.9.40 servers.

I understand. It is a limitation. And the reason for this is that the communication protocol is different. We try to avoid changing the protocol for new versions but sometimes we have to - to optimize some things.
