Hi
I'm trying to upgrade VisualCron from version 4.8.1 to 4.9.35 on XP, and I'm getting the error message "Coud not add VisualCron Tray Client for autostart, Object reference not set to an instance of an object.".

As part of trying to resolve this I tried to remove the old version through the normal method, which failed. I removed it with Windows Installer Clean Up tool. This did not remove the VisualCron service, so I deleted that out of the registry and rebooted. Now I can't install version 4.8.1 or 4.9.35.

What next?

Is the OS 32 or 64 bit?

It seems like some permission problem. When we are trying to set this we set this in the registry.

I only want a client installation on this machine, is it possible to install without the tray?

Yes, it should. Try downloading the custom installer from http://www.visualcron.com/download.php  and we will look at this issue some more.

Running "install_clientSILENT.bat" does not succeed, and no indication of a problem.
Running "msiexec /i VisualCron.msi" from command shell initiates the installation but then there is an error "Error reading from c:\vc\ie7_16_256.ico. Verify that the file exists an that you can access it.". I can access that file. Copying one of the other icons to that name doesn't work either.

We'll look into this, to handle the first error, as it is not vital. Hopefully we have a new version soon.

Still, this issue is probably related to permissions of the current user - the user needs access to the registry.

I am running the job under my own account, that is in the group of Administrators for this machine.
When I run VisualCron.msi from the desktop it spawns 4 msiexec.msi processes, 3 under my account and another under system.

Did you have a chance to test this version?

Yes, sorry I didn't reply sooner. The install gets to the the first 'install steps' window, then when I select 'next' it shows the 'initializing setup' window for a few seconds, then it halts.
I was hoping to be able to give some more useful diagnostics, but there really isn't much to work with at the minute.

We experienced the same issues when upgrading from 11 to 37 this week-end - "Could not add VisualCron Tray Client for autostart, Object reference not set to an instance of an ob.." We had problems on both server and client installations of VC. The only way we could get it working was first un-installing VC; rebooting Server/PC and doing a fresh install. The server installs also required us having to re-import the VC Server Settings and Tasks/Jobs (I second Erik (in another thread) re. the value of this feature). All the configured VC connections on the client PC's had to be deleted and re-added.

When Initialize setup is being written then contents of the package is unzipped to the tmp-folder. Do you have any special settings here?

The only known difference between the .11. and .37 setup is that the latter is just starting the Tray client after install. But the problem is not with that but extracting the files in the .exe or executing the setup after extraction.

It has installed! Joy!
Once you led me to the tmp folder I first of all cleared out all of the old files then re-ran the VisualCron4.9.38.exe.
This again did not work.
Looking in tmp, I found the extracted installation files including VisualCron.msi, ran it, and installed without incident.
The new version looks very smart. Hopefully I can recover all my settings now as well (this is only a client machine, so nothing very hard to recreate anyway).
Thank you for your help.

Henrik, I run the installations with the Administrator Account on the Win2003 servers so there should be no permission issues etc. Also I could replicate the problem on more the one VC installation. Anyway we got to work in the end; just thought I let you know that there could be a possible problem with upgrading from older versions...
