We have a sftp connection that works in FileZilla when using SFTP(SSH) with normal password authentication.

We can see the folder structures and can send/get files from their site.

But in VC, it does not show a folder listing and comes back with an error of "Unable to change folder to /To_THR/PROD/.

When opening the connection in VC Explorer, it comes back with the following messages.

VC

Yet there is nothing in remote file directory. Not even a "/".

I asked the vendor if this is just a simple sftp standard connection and he stated yes.

We have several dozen SFTP connections and this is the first we have come across this issue.

Ideas?

I'll ask the obvious questions needed to try and troubleshoot this.

1. What version of VC are you using?
2. What product is the SFTP server running that you are connecting to?

I've done plenty of troubleshooting client issues when connecting to 'our' WS_FTP Server w/SSH server, but not had any issues using VC to connect to anything yet.

Oh, thought just popped into my head. RECREATE the connection for this sftp server. Don't just change the settings and hope for the best. I seem to recall some glitch in the past that if you happened to do anything even remotely related to Public Key authentication and then decided to go back to password, it might cause issues and the only fix was to re-create the connection. No amount of adjusting settings for that connection would fix it.

For some reason, my quick reply failed yesterday.

1. VC 6.2.2
2. I am not sure of their product, but from all the documentation that I have found when trying to research this issue, it appears they use ssh-rsa (Linux).

I created a key pair using PuTTy and now I get a new error: "SFTP error 11".

I changed the authentication to Public Key and pointed it to a private key. I also sent them our public key and asked if they could update their listings to accept our IP. Please keep in mind, I am getting NO help from their side if I am doing this right or wrong.

I have tried changing all the settings available in the VC properties. I even removed the password and uncheck the auto-authentication. I have tried all the different combinations of encryption as well.

So, now my latest hurdle is getting past the Error 11.

Any ideas?

You said that you were using password auth in the first post and now you are mentioning a public key?

Correct. That is the information we got from them, yet it is inconsistent with the ssh-rsa standards.

I asked specifically for some documentation from them and this was their IT manager... "LOL I just send them the site URL. There are no instructions, I never needed any and I set this up about 8 years ago."

So, for standard SSH-RSA set up, I am guessing only the private key and login name are required.

Yet, it does not work with the password, without the password or anything in between.

But if you have a working connection in Filezilla to this specific SFTP server you should have all details if it is public key, with password etc?

I have the same prroblem. I am using 6.2.2 I get a connection and I have confirmed with the provider who hosts the server that I am connected.

But I can not list directorys or upload/ download files

I get the following error

SFTP Error: 11
Unable to change folder to: /outbox/P1585PK009/, err: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I should add that I am using public key identification and that it is a new connection created from the ground up, no copying of existing connections.

Aother quick Update.
I have tried using the same keypair and username in WS-FTPpro and it works fine here
