Having a few issues here.

We tried to upgrade a Windows Server 2003 64bit box from 5.5.5 to 6.0.9

The install worked just fine, but when we tried to get the new client to talk to the newly installed server (via local connection), it would not connect. It also made the Server EXTREMELY slow. I had to uninstall and revert back to 5.5.5.

All was fine again.

Any idea why this may have happened?

This environment also seems to not work connecting directly to Oracle (under 5.5.5). Oracle software is 10g 64bit. 10.2.0.3. 6.0.9 does not give the option of installing as 64bit and always wants to install into the 32bit program files directory. If Visual Cron is running as 32bit and Oracle as 64bit, then they will have issues seeing each other, correct?

I think, what happened, is that the older version logs execution output to a tmp folder without deleting it. The new version corrects this by deleting these at startup. If you have had this old version running for a while I presume a lot of files are there and maybe that you should delete it manually first.

Now, this folder location can vary from system to system but it is located in:

programdata\visualcron\output

Here is one example on my Windows 7 box:

C:\ProgramData\VisualCron\output

You can delete all files but the "log" folder.

OK, it still tries to install into the C:\Program Files(x86)\ directory even after I delete the entire visualcron directory. How can I ensure that this is installing as a 64 bit version?

Also, since this is Windows 2003, there is no Program Data directory. I could not locate any folder named output located on the server.

The current installer is x86. Still, the files can be placed anywhere and ran as x64 if x64 system. You can change place to install when installing. Moving after will likely cause problems as the VisualCron service is locked to the folder it was installed in.

ok. got that issue resolved. Thanks for clearing that up.

Have you ever seen a 6.0.9 brand new install never be able to connect to itself locally.

It says "Failed to connect to localhost over IPC, cannot find the file specified". I reinstalled it and rebooted it several times to no avail. Reinstall 5.5.5 and it works like a charm.

Since this is a brand new install of both server and client, I've not had a chance to look at any user credentials or settings and this is the initial load of the client (right after install)

I am not sure I am following you. Did you get 6.0.9 working now?

Let me start over. I have 2 questions still.

1) I had a server with 5.5.5 loaded on it. Server is Windows 2003 64bit. I wanted to upgrade to 6.0.9. I uninstalled 5.5.5 and deleted the entire visualcron installation directory after taking a full export. I then rebooted the server and installed a fresh copy of 6.0.9. When I tried to use the client to connect to the local server it continually got the error I mentioned above ("Failed to connect to localhost over IPC, cannot find the file specified"). I tried reinstalling several times to no avail. I eventually had to uninstall 6.0.9 and go back to 5.5.5. Any idea why this may have happened. I still need to upgrade this.

2) We are have some odd behavior with the connection to databases. On some servers they work and on others they do not. We are attempting to connect to an Oracle database. All TNSNames entries are correct and the server can connect to the database string via other methods without issue. Of the 4 servers we have trying to do this, 2 are version 6.0.9 both of which work fine. The other 2 are version 5.5.5 of which only one will connect. This is why I am attempting to upgrade the last 2 to 6.0.9. Does Visual Cron use a local TNSNames to connect to Oracle, or what procedure does it use? Any insight here?

1) we have seen temporary issues like this caused by the Windows service not terminating normally. But these go away after computer restart. I guess your problem is related to .NET and service packs. Please make sure you have the latest service pack to .NET 3.5

2) VisualCron is currently dependent on the installation and configuration of the Oracle Client. The whole connection procedure relies on that configuration and there is almost no other logic in VisualCron. So, I think you need to compare client configurations.

OK, we fixed issue #2. It was a path statement issue. This server has Oracle Database, client, and devsuite installed and the devsuite was at the top of the statement. I had to re-order it so that the client was first. Once that was done, the Oracle connections started working.

Still working on #1. I will let you know if installing .NET 4 and all its patches does the trick or not.

OK. I installed all versions of .NET available and all are current (from 1.1 to 4). I've tried purging the computer of everything visual cron and that seems not to matter either.

When 5.5.5 is installed, I can connect and use the server. 6.0.9 and 6.1.2 do not allow me to connect to the server, either locally, or from a different networked machine running the same client.

Yeah, I got version 6 to install and let me in. It still doesn't work quite right though.

It will run every job and say that they completed correctly, but none of the jobs actually DO anything. None of the scripts run and no files get moved. We tried reentering credentials (which has fixed this behavior in the past) to no avail.
