We regularly use the SFTP test connection feature to test new keys/passwords etc. But the resulting popup window is very terse.
I would suggest to add an additional 'details' button on the popup window that shows detailed debug information on the connection test resembling for instance the output you get on linux with openssh 'ssh -v -v', showing all kinds of interesting data, also about supported ciphers and such.
